A collage homage to badass American naturalist, ornithologist and illustrator John James Audubon (1785-1851). I have admired his work for years and decided it was finally time to select some of my favourite animal characters of his; throw them in together and tell a different story in each remix.
Warm tangerine orange, golden kumquat yellow, and earthy chestnut brown sit at the heart of this print, cooled and grounded by deep forest green and soft ivory white, with touches of charcoal black threading through the composition. That combination of warm citrus tones and rich naturalistic darks makes it a natural companion for walls painted in a deep sage or olive green – an analogous relationship that echoes the foliage without competing with it – or for a warm terracotta or burnt clay tone that picks up the orange fruit and the squirrels’ rufous colouring directly. If you prefer a lighter room, an off-white with a warm yellow undertone lets the ivory flowers read crisply while keeping the whole palette cohered. The mood is exuberant but grounded: abundant, a little theatrical, rooted in the natural world. It belongs in a kitchen or dining room where the citrus motif feels genuinely at home, or in a study or reading corner where the layered collage composition rewards a close look. In terms of decorating style, it suits maximalist, botanical, eclectic, and mid-century modern interiors with equal conviction. Printed with archival pigment inks on Enhanced Matte art paper – a smooth, gallery-grade stock with a soft, glare-free surface – the finish reads quietly on the wall, with none of the reflective distraction of a gloss print; the surface suits both slim, lipped modern frames and ornate gilded vintage ones with equal ease. At A3 (29.7 × 42 cm) the print works well propped on a shelf, ledge, or as part of a salon-style gallery arrangement; at A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) it carries enough presence to hold a wall on its own, particularly above a sideboard or beside a doorway where the circular composition can be read at a slight distance. This print is also available as a ready-to-hang canvas in a 28 × 40 inch (70 × 100 cm) format, which needs no frame and suits larger walls where the collage’s detail and warmth can fill the space fully.
