A collage homage to badass American naturalist, ornithologist and illustrator John James Audubon (1785-1851). I have admired his work for years and decided it was finally time to select some of my favourite animal characters of his; throw them in together and tell a different story in each remix.
Charcoal black and warm slate grey form the anchoring tones of this piece, lit up by flashes of golden yellow, burnt amber-orange, soft white, and a cool teal that cuts through like a breath of air – together they create a mood that is wild and considered at once, somewhere between a naturalist’s field notebook and a contemporary art gallery. That particular pairing of warm and cool makes the print a natural companion for walls in deep forest green or aged teal, colours that echo the piece’s cooler notes while grounding it in something earthy; equally, a warm charcoal or off-black wall will draw out the dense, shadowed body of the central fox and pelican, creating a tonal depth that feels immersive rather than heavy. For a lighter room, a warm cream or aged linen – nothing too stark or blue-white – will let the golden yellows lift without fighting the background.
