A collage homage to badass American naturalist, ornithologist and illustrator John James Audubon (1785-1851). I have admired his work for years and decided it was finally time to select some of my favourite animal characters of his; throw them in together and tell a different story in each remix.
This print pulls together a palette of mossy green, warm amber, dusty slate, soft biscuit and charcoal – colours that feel rooted in the natural world and carry a quietly adventurous mood. That warmth in the amber and biscuit tones means the composition sits happily against walls painted in any earthy mid-tone: terracotta, warm mushroom, or a deep ochre that echoes the fruit-laden branch at the centre. For something cooler and more considered, the dusty slate and mossy greens in the foliage point naturally to sage or a greyed eucalyptus wall, picking up the analogous cool-green temperature of the print’s botanical layers. If you prefer contrast, the charcoal geometric fragments give the image enough visual weight to hold its own against a deep forest green or even an inky teal, letting the biscuit and amber tones glow. It belongs in a study, a reading room, or a wide hallway where its contained circular composition rewards a passing glance and a longer look in equal measure – and it would suit a dining room with natural timber or rattan furniture just as well.
