This series is inspired by a chat over coffee sat in a small local Edinburgh park surrounded by blooming trees and tulips. Whilst talking about pandemic strangeness, personal worries, fears, and just plain randomness our eyes kept wandering to the flowering nature around us. The series aims to capture the thought processes, emotions and impressions of natural and general beauty the encounter left me with. The pieces work very well sat next to each other, connected by the organic brushstrokes.
Saturated golden amber fills the background of this print, warming everything around it, while the tulips themselves glow in a deep egg-yolk yellow that reads almost luminous against the ochre field. Teal and turquoise sweep through in loose, painterly arcs, a cool counterpoint to all that warmth, and a soft lavender-lilac drifts in from the right edge alongside a flush of coral-salmon. Deep forest green anchors the stems and leaves, and a rich violet pools at the base like a shadow given colour. That combination – warm amber and yellow dominant, with teal as their complement and lavender softening the contrast – means the print lifts beautifully against walls painted in a warm off-white or a pale butter cream (both tonal neighbours of the amber), and it holds just as well against a deep teal or petrol blue, which mirrors the cooler passages in the work and lets the yellow tulips advance. If you prefer contrast, a warm terracotta or burnt-clay wall will echo the coral and amber undertones without competing.
