Ichi is the gentle, joyful approach of entities.
The Movements series was inspired by the vintage Art Deco style illustration Dancer by Japanese artist Kobayakawa Kiyoshi. The three abstract artworks were created to accompany the reworked version of the original 1932 illustration. The shapes, lines, and colours convey a different rhythm, pace and mood while creating an abstract performance when combined.
Warm terracotta-brown and blush pink carry the palette’s temperature – both are earthen, red-undertoned hues that immediately suggest which walls will let this print breathe. A soft clay or warm sand wall plays analogously, deepening those tones without competition, while a dusty sage or muted olive draws on the dark khaki-green bar tucked inside the larger circle, offering a cool-to-warm contrast that feels considered rather than jarring. Crisp off-white or a warm greige work as neutrals precisely because their yellow-cream undertones mirror the print’s background rather than cooling it down. The cobalt blue and mint green strokes are the print’s counterpoint – lively, upright, slightly playful – which means this is not a quiet piece; it suits rooms with some energy in them. Stylistically it sits comfortably in mid-century modern, Memphis-inflected contemporary, Bauhaus-inspired, and eclectic maximalist interiors, where abstract geometry and bold colour are welcome rather than surprising. A home studio, an open-plan living space, or a wide hallway would give it the room it earns; hang it at eye level where the vertical rhythm of the stacked shapes can be read as movement. Ichi is part of the Movements collection – a quartet that, as the artist puts it, forms "a visual performance, each piece contributing its unique rhythm to create a compelling whole" – and pairing it with other prints from the collection on a gallery wall lets that choreography play out across the room. Printed using archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® – a museum-grade, 100% cotton paper with a subtle felt texture – the surface is fully matte and glare-free, which means the print reads clearly under both natural and artificial light without the colour shifts that coated papers can introduce; this also makes it equally at home in a slim oak or black metal frame and in something more ornate and gilded. At A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) or A3 (29.7 × 42 cm) it slots neatly onto a shelf or into a gallery arrangement where the vertical composition holds its own among smaller works. A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) gives the stacked shapes enough height to assert themselves as a standalone piece on a mid-sized wall, while A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm) suits a generous feature wall where the scale matches the print’s rhythm. At A0 (84.1 × 118.9 cm) it becomes a room-anchoring statement, the abstract forms large enough to feel almost architectural.
