The set of four Fashion Illustrations were each created to a specific brief.
This one is Moment: an iconic moment in fashion, perhaps from the runway, from fashion history, a brand collaboration or any other memorable work in the field.
I chose the work of photographer Tim Walker with a portrait of Nyaueth Riam in a frilly Molly Goddard dress (yes, same designer as the one from Killing Eve). Tim Walker’s photography is many times very maximalist and fairytale like, not easy to capture in a single illustration. However this portrait of the gorgeous Nyaueth in the diaphanous dress really captured my imagination because I feel that model and photographer tell a whole dreamy story in just one portrait without the usual props, colour cacophony and entire staged scene.
This portrait carries a palette of deep blue-black, dark teal, dusty blush-pink, cool mid-grey, and a warm taupe-brown – colours that sit at the cooler end of the spectrum but are grounded by that underlying warmth in the background tone. Walls in warm off-white or soft stone will echo the taupe-brown of the background and keep the figure from receding; a deep slate or muted teal-grey draws out the cool tones in the braided hair and electric blue outline for a more immersive, tonal scheme; or, for a bolder complementary contrast, a dusty terracotta reads against the cool blue-black and makes the blush-pink details glow. Avoid stark cool whites, which will flatten the warmth entirely. In terms of style, this print genuinely suits contemporary African-influenced interiors, bold maximalist spaces, modern minimalist rooms that rely on a single strong figurative work, and fashion-forward editorial interiors. It would feel at home in a dressing room, a bedroom, or a living room corner styled around a single powerful statement piece – somewhere it can be looked at slowly, rather than glanced at in passing. Part of Diedododa’s Fashion Illustration collection, a series of expressive portraits celebrating remarkable women who have shaped the fashion world, it pairs with the Vivienne Westwood, Rei Kawakubo, and Stella Tennant prints for a gallery wall that feels considered rather than curated. It makes a genuinely personal gift for someone with a connection to fashion, to African culture, or simply to the idea that representation on the wall matters.
Printed with archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® – a museum-grade cotton paper with a subtle felt texture – the surface is fully matte and glare-free, meaning the depth of those dark tones reads consistently across the room without reflections competing with the image. The A4 and A3 sizes suit a bedside shelf, a narrow hallway wall, or a grouped gallery arrangement; the A2 and A3 also work well propped on a mantelpiece or picture ledge. The A2 and A1 sizes hold their own as standalone statement pieces above a console or beside a wardrobe mirror, while the A0 – at 84.1 × 118.9 cm – has the scale to anchor an entire wall and turn the figure into something genuinely commanding.
