Mr.Cat usually doesn’t like these social gatherings but he went and put on his best dinner jacket because he heard there would prawn cocktail….his favourite..
All the collages in this series are comprised of my own illustrations, vintage botanical illustrations and close-up shots of textures from my own photo library.
A whiskered gentleman in evening dress, painted with a straight face and a twinkle in his amber-yellow eyes, this portrait trades in warm, aged tones: soft blush cream, camel-tan paper, deep chocolate brown fur, near-black charcoal in the suit, and a spray of sage green leaves with white cherry blossom overhead, all ringed by a thin antique gold oval. That mellow, sepia-leaning palette settles beautifully against sage green, olive, warm cream, dusty pink or a moody bottle green or ink-dark navy wall, where the gold line and yellow eyes catch the light. Stylists would place it firmly in dark academia and grandmillennial schemes, and it earns its keep just as well in eclectic maximalist rooms or a classic traditional interior with panelling and heavy curtains. Hang it in a study, library corner or reading nook where its bookish formality feels at home, in a hallway to greet guests with deadpan dignity, or in a downstairs loo for a well-judged wink. It belongs to the Animals In Suits collection and pairs naturally with its fellow besuited sitters for a gallery wall of improbable ancestors — and it makes a genuinely good gift for cat owners, book lovers and anyone whose humour runs dry.
The print is made with archival pigment inks on Enhanced Matte art paper, a smooth museum-grade stock whose soft, glare-free surface lets the fine fur detail and blossom read clearly from any angle, and suits both a slim modern frame and an ornate vintage gilt one. A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) and A3 (29.7 × 42 cm) sit nicely on a picture shelf or within a gallery wall of portraits; A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) and A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm) work as statement pieces above a desk, dresser or fireplace; A0 (84.1 × 118.9 cm) anchors a whole wall with full ancestral gravitas. It is also available as a 28 × 40" (70 × 100 cm) canvas print, ready to hang with no frame needed.
Meet the distinguished residents of Animals in Suits – a curious collection of finely dressed creatures ready to lend their portrait to your world.
From a top-hatted fox and impeccably tailored badger to a solemn cat, dapper hare and some decidedly eccentric ladies, each character has their own personality, story and sense of occasion. Florals, faded textures and fragments of the past surround them, creating portraits that feel at once nostalgic, theatrical and wonderfully strange.
Each artwork is built as a collage from my own original illustrations, vintage botanical illustrations, and close-up photographs of textures from my personal photo library. These elements are layered together to create richly detailed imaginary portraits with the patina and imperfections of something discovered rather than newly made.A celebration of animals, character and dressing up far more seriously than the occasion requires.
