The Movements series was inspired by the vintage Art Deco style illustration Dancer by Japanese artist Kobayakawa Kiyoshi. The three abstract artworks were created to accompany the reworked version of the original 1932 illustration. The shapes, lines, and colours convey a different rhythm, pace and mood while creating an abstract performance when combined.
Burnt amber dominates this print – a deep, warm ochre-orange that floods the background and anchors the entire composition – with the dancer’s cream-ivory robes, a soft coral-orange dress, mustard yellow hemline, and a navy near-black hat creating the full palette. A mint-green diagonal accent cuts through the centre, cool and surprising against all that warmth. Because the palette is so thoroughly warm-toned, the most natural wall pairings are its analogous neighbours: a deep terracotta, a rich tobacco brown, or a burnt sienna would fold the print into the wall like a tonal ensemble. For contrast without cold, a warm off-white or parchment wall lets the amber glow forward without fighting it. The mint accent, though small, means the print can also hold its own against a muted sage green – the cool undertone of sage picks up that single geometric sliver and gives the whole composition a quiet vibrancy.
