Who said cute can’t be creepy. This is the latest member of the Animals in Suits series: Red Panda Dolly Girl!
All the collages in this series are comprised of my own illustrations, vintage botanical illustrations and close-up shots of textures from my own photo library.
Dusty blush pink, warm russet orange, soft ash grey, cream white, and the near-black of a Victorian gingham check give this print a palette that sits somewhere between a faded photograph and a watercolour dream – cool in its grey-blue ground, warm in its fox-red centre. That contrast makes it particularly forgiving with wall colours: the dusty rose tones in the toile-style background will deepen beautifully against a warm off-white or pale stone wall, while the cool ash grey ground makes it equally at home on a deeper slate or blue-grey surface. If you want something with a little more presence, a muted terracotta or dried-rose wall will pull the warm russet from the red panda’s face and braid right forward, creating an analogous harmony that feels both considered and surprising.
The theatrical gravity of this piece – a solemn, impeccably dressed creature clutching a porcelain doll – sits naturally in a Victorian gothic, dark academia, or maximalist vintage interior. A study or library wall gives it room to perform, and it would hold its own above a fireplace or on a picture ledge among botanical prints and found objects. It also works beautifully in a child’s room styled with heritage rather than primary-colour sensibility.
This print belongs to the Animals in Suits collection – a cast of finely dressed creatures described as "wonderfully strange," each portrait built from original illustration, vintage botanical imagery and close-up texture photography, layered together to feel discovered rather than made. The red panda here is every inch one of those "decidedly eccentric ladies," dressed with far more seriousness than any occasion could demand.
The design is available as a large canvas print, measuring 28×40 inches and mounted on a pine frame ready to hang straight from the box, with no additional framing required. If you prefer something smaller, the same image comes as a matte art print on Enhanced Matte art paper in A4, A3 and A2.
Meet the distinguished residents of Animals in Suits – a curious collection of finely dressed creatures ready to lend their portrait to your world.
From a top-hatted fox and impeccably tailored badger to a solemn cat, dapper hare and some decidedly eccentric ladies, each character has their own personality, story and sense of occasion. Florals, faded textures and fragments of the past surround them, creating portraits that feel at once nostalgic, theatrical and wonderfully strange.
Each artwork is built as a collage from my own original illustrations, vintage botanical illustrations, and close-up photographs of textures from my personal photo library. These elements are layered together to create richly detailed imaginary portraits with the patina and imperfections of something discovered rather than newly made.A celebration of animals, character and dressing up far more seriously than the occasion requires.
