This is the third in my series of exclusive custom illustrations made in collaboration with the famous Edinburgh Gin distillery. The Gin Pig.
Always a favorite for anyone who takes the Edinburgh Gin distillery tour to see, the Gin Pig was a feature in the more genius (and wealthy) Victorian homes.
This print works in black and white – stark ink lines, deep shadow black, clean paper white, and the faintest cool grey in the mid-tones – and that restrained, monochrome palette gives it unusual decorating flexibility while still demanding a wall that respects its graphic boldness. Cool off-white or soft warm white walls let the linework breathe without competing; a deep charcoal or near-black feature wall creates a tonal, almost theatrical pairing that draws out the print’s darkest shadows; and if you want contrast, a warm terracotta or dusty sage reads as a complementary foil against the cool grey undertones, grounding the image without swamping it. The subject – a pig held aloft, pouring gin into a waiting glass – is playful and irreverent, which makes it a natural fit for eclectic, maximalist, or graphic-design-led interiors, and it sits just as comfortably in a contemporary pub-meets-home aesthetic where wit and craft share equal billing.
