The set of four Fashion Illustrations were each created to a specific brief.
This is Muse: create an illustration of one of fashion’s great muses.
I chose the late Stella Tennant. As one of the supermodels of the 90s I remember her stunning unusual and androgynous look stood out for me. With well over 2 decades of a fashion career she became the muse to the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and countless others. To me she always had an air of mystery, depth, and delightful mischief, which I tried to capture in this illustration.
Stella Tennant – Muse fills a room with a distinctly cool-leaning palette: a saturated cobalt blue, a grape-edged violet, a warm cadmium yellow, a coral-tinged red, and two greens – one deep forest, one pale sage – all suspended against a skin-warm blush ground. Because the dominant hues lean cool, walls painted in soft blue-grey, pale lavender, or a chalky off-white with a pink undertone all sit in easy analogous harmony with the print, letting the cobalt and violet read at full strength without competing. The warm yellow and coral provide enough contrast to hold their own against a deeper charcoal or slate wall too, should you want that graphic tension. Avoid warm ochre or terracotta backdrops – they would fight the print’s cool temperature rather than support it. In terms of interior style, this print genuinely suits contemporary maximalist interiors, where its layered circles and gestural brushwork feel at home alongside eclectic pattern; fashion-forward urban apartments styled around art and photography; soft modern spaces where a single striking figurative work is the point; and mid-century modern rooms where the geometric circles echo the era’s graphic sensibility. A dressing room, a home studio, or a sitting room wall are natural placements – anywhere the boldness of a woman like Tennant makes immediate sense.
