Cyril is the portrait of a real life young grey squirrel that was rescued by a friend. She nursed him back to health and set him free in the Botanics, so if you’re there one day and see a happy squirrel….it might just be this here Cyril!
Creature Features is a celebration of species tall and small – from exotic creatures to farmyard favourites. In the series I aim to put a contemporary spin on traditional wildlife illustration, depicting each species in bold colour combinations or playful poses.
Cyril sits alert against a deep teal background – cool, slightly green-toned, close to a classic peacock or dark jade – with his warm chestnut-brown body, silvery-grey tail, and cream-white chest creating a palette that moves fluidly between cool and warm. That teal is the print’s dominant force, making it a natural companion to walls in a similar deep teal or a slightly lighter duck-egg blue, where the print sits in easy analogous harmony. The warm chestnut and burnt-orange shadow at Cyril’s feet pull in the opposite direction, meaning a wall in warm terracotta or a soft clay will pick up those tones and create a complementary contrast that makes the cool background sing. For neutrals, the cream in Cyril’s chest steers you towards warm white or a pale oat rather than a cool grey, keeping the whole wall honest to the print’s temperature. In terms of style, this print fits genuinely well in nature-inspired Scandi interiors, eclectic maximalist rooms, contemporary illustrated nurseries, and mid-century modern schemes where teal and warm wood already coexist. It belongs in a child’s bedroom or playroom, a reading nook, or a home office where a touch of wit keeps the mood light – Cyril holds his acorn with the quiet dignity of someone who has his priorities in order. Part of the Creature Features collection on Diedododa – a whimsical exploration of the animal kingdom rendered in bold, expressive strokes and vivid hues – it pairs naturally with other prints from the collection to build a lively gallery wall. It makes a considered gift for animal lovers, nature enthusiasts, or anyone furnishing a first home with character.
Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag®, a museum-grade cotton paper carrying archival pigment inks, the surface has a subtle felt texture and a matte, glare-free finish that reads as quietly luxurious without demanding attention – it sits comfortably behind both slim modern frames and ornate vintage ones without any competing sheen. At A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) or A3 (29.7 × 42 cm), Cyril works on a shelf ledge, a mantelpiece, or as part of a mixed gallery wall where his teal ground anchors bolder neighbours. The A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) and A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm) sizes bring him to statement scale – strong enough to hold a nursery or living-room wall on their own. The A0 (84.1 × 118.9 cm) is a room-anchoring size, best given generous wall space so the detail in that silver-grey tail and the warmth of the shadow have room to register. This print is also available as a 28 × 40 inch (70 × 100 cm) canvas print, ready to hang with no frame needed.
