& (Ampersand) is for Amaryllis.
The amaryllis plant has a symbiotic relationship with carpenter bees, and is also visited by moths at night.. In Victorian floriography Amaryllis symbolises strength and determination due to the plant’s height and sturdy nature.
The Botanical Alphabet is inspired by old scientific botanical illustrations and categories of olden day Explorers and Naturists. Paired with modern outlined sans serif letters and bold colour blocks, it has a much more contemporary feel while still keeping a hint of the much loved illustration genre of the past.
The Botanical Alphabet series is also available as greeting cards, so you can send a very personal card for any occasion featuring your friend’s initial.
Warm amber orange, soft blush pink, chalk white, ink black, sage green, and a creamy ivory – these are the colours that give the Botanical Alphabet & print its particular character: warm in temperature overall, with the orange carrying a golden undertone and the blush leaning peachy rather than cool. That warmth means the print sits beautifully against walls in deep terracotta or burnt sienna, which echo the orange as tonal neighbours and deepen the whole composition. For a softer, analogous pairing, a dusty blush or muted rose wall lets the pink shadow within the ampersand breathe outward into the room. If you want contrast, a warm off-white or linen-toned wall – nothing with a grey or blue base – will throw the orange forward without competing with it; equally, a deep sage or muted olive draws out the green foliage and holds the print in a calm, grounded scheme. This print belongs to the Botanical Alphabet collection, a series that fuses vintage botanical illustration with bold modern typography – part field guide, part design object – and it pairs naturally with other letters from the collection arranged as a gallery wall. At home in a botanical living room, a warm maximalist study, or a nursery where you are spelling out a name or word, it also suits a kitchen or hallway where a single confident character can hold a wall. It makes a considered gift for someone who loves nature, typography, or both – especially meaningful chosen for an initial.
Printed with archival pigment inks on Enhanced Matte art paper, a smooth gallery-grade stock with a soft, glare-free finish, the surface reads as quietly museum-grade without any shine to interrupt the fine engraved linework or the flat colour fields. That matte quality works with both slim modern frames and ornate vintage ones, since neither has to fight a reflective surface. At A4 the print tucks neatly onto a shelf or into a cluster of frames; at A3 it holds its own as part of a considered gallery wall; at A2 it becomes a proper statement piece above a desk or bedside table; and at A1 it has the scale to anchor a full wall in a living room or hallway. This print is also available as a ready-to-hang canvas measuring 28×40 inches (70×100 cm), which needs no frame at all.
