W is for Waterlily.

All ancient cultures have associated water lilies with gods and spirituality – symbolising purity, joy, pleasure, rebirth, wellness, peace and more.

The Botanical Alphabet is inspired by old scientific botanical illustrations and categories of olden day Explorers and Naturists. Paired with modern outlined sans serif letters and bold colour blocks, it has a much more contemporary feel while still keeping a hint of the much loved illustration genre of the past.

The Botanical Alphabet series is also available as greeting cards, so you can send a very personal card for any occasion featuring your friend’s initial.

Soft dusty mauve, warm ivory, deep brownish-burgundy, muted olive green, and touches of amber and pale straw – these are the colours that give the Botanical Alphabet W its quietly sophisticated character. The palette sits at the cool-to-neutral boundary, with the mauve and burgundy carrying faintly cool undertones while the ivory and amber pull it gently warm. On the wall, a soft grey-white with the faintest warm cast lets the ivory and straw tones in the water lily breathe without competition. For a harmonious tonal scheme, a dusky muted mauve – an analogous neighbour of the print’s own lavender-grey background – wraps the composition in quiet coherence. If the room can carry contrast, a deep warm terracotta plays off the cool mauve and amplifies the amber stamens at the flower’s heart. Against a rich, almost-black olive wall the green leaf element holds its own and the whole print reads as vintage and anchored. The mood is contemplative and botanical – part scientific study, part modern still life – which suits a reading room, a home library, a studio, or a calm bedroom wall above a bedside table. The print belongs to the Botanical Alphabet collection, a series that fuses the meticulous draughtsmanship of historical botanical illustration with bold modern lettering and vivid colour blocks, described by the artist as "a nod to the past with a decidedly modern twist." It pairs naturally with other letters from the collection on a gallery wall, and sits comfortably within botanical, maximalist-traditional, modern-vintage, and contemporary eclectic interiors. It makes a considered and personal gift for anyone with a W initial, a love of natural history, or an eye for design.

The print is produced with archival pigment inks on Enhanced Matte art paper, a smooth, gallery-grade stock whose soft, glare-free surface gives watercolour-like depth to the detailed botanical linework – museum-grade quality that holds up in a slim Scandi frame as readily as in an ornate gilded one. At A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) or A3 (29.7 × 42 cm) it sits well on a shelf, a mantelpiece, or as part of a clustered gallery arrangement; the A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) has enough presence to stand alone above a desk or console table; and the A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm) carries the scale to anchor a full wall in a hallway or living room, where the large burgundy letterform reads boldly from a distance. This print is also available as a ready-to-hang canvas print at 28 × 40 inches (70 × 100 cm), requiring no frame.
